A Beautifully decorated statue of Lord Buddha along with beautiful statues of Padmasambhava and Avalokiteshvara is housed in the temple. Tsuglag Khang also known as Dalai Lama's Temple complex is the home for His Holiness Dalai Lama. The monastery deals with the training of monks for rituals associated with holy shrine, whereas the temple is a chief place of worship.

Dress Code

  • For men the dress code is Shirt & Trouser, Dhoti or Pyjamas with upper cloth.
  • For women the preferred dress code is saree or half-saree with blouse or chudidhar with pyjama and upper cloth.
  • Shorts, mini-skirts, middies, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans and short-length T-shirts are not allowed.
  • The weather is cold throughout the year. Rainfalls and snowfalls often occur there. one should wear proper winter clothes with mufflers and gloves. An umbrella is also a must to carry.

  • Do respect ancient customs and co-piligrims while at temple.

Architecture

Tsuglagkhang Monastery is a beautifully built structure. This is more like a temple along with being a residential complex for His Holiness and his followers. The complex houses the Photang (Dalai Lama's residence), Tibet Museum, Tsuglagkhang Temple and Namgyal Gompa. The first building inside the Tsuglagkhang Monastery in Tibet Museum. The ground floor of the monastery comprises of Chinese incursion of Tibet along with several other pictures. The museum shows tourists the major cause behind the inflow of Tibetans to India. This monastery is the biggest Tibetan Temple outside Tibet. It has got a big meditation hall that comprises of some beautiful thangkas, and statues along with Kalachakra temple that has beautiful murals. The monastery also has a place called Namgyal Gompa which is reserved for Tibetan monks to get indulged in a religious debate.

The temple has fresco decorations of 722 deities of the mandala, Shakayamuni Buddha, and the central Kalachakra image. Dalai Lama personally directed the painting of the frescos done by three master painters over a period of three years. The walls and columns have many traditional Tibetan Thangka paintings. The Kalachakra Temple is a simple hall, painted in yellow, it contains mesmerizing murals of the Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) mandala, specifically linked to Avalokitesvara, of whom the Dalai Lama is a manifestation.

Religious Significance

When the 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after the Chinese occupation, Dharamsala became his new home and the base of the Tibet Government-in-Exile. The town is today often called Little Tibet, preserving Tibet’s religious and cultural heritage, keeping the Tibetan cause alive internationally and serving as the focal point for the 100,000 Tibetans scattered in refugee settlements all over India. Many Tibetans have made McLeodganj their home and therefore the town has a strong Tibetan influence, crimson-robed monks on their way to the monasteries are a common sight.

History
