Tabo, Lahaul and Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, India
Known for having evidence of human habitation in the prehistoric times, Tabo Rock Art is a marvel to visit for history lovers in Spiti Valley. It has paintings dating back a thousand years and have a similarity to those of Ajanta Caves. The caves are a symbol of human life as monks lived here having one of the oldest Buddhist enclaves in the Himalayas. The frescoes here depict different stories from the Buddhist scriptures and have a collection of thangkas (scroll paintings), manuscripts, well-preserved statues, frescos and extensive murals which cover almost every wall. The place now has a monastery called the Tabo Monastery which was founded in 996 C.E. and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. This place is a national treasure and a marvellous sight to witness to get an insight of the prehistoric era.
