Golconda Fort is an outstanding example of brilliant engineering and magical architecture. Located at a distance of 11 KM from the city, it is the most famous of all Hyderabad tourist places. The name of the fort has been derived from the Telugu words "Golla" and "Konda" which together means 'Shepherd's Hill'.

Golconda Fort is is one of the most popular forts near Hyderabad. It attracts many tourists throughout the year with its amazing architecture and interiors. It was built by Qutb Shahi rulers in the year 1518. The fort had its charm until the year 1687 when Aurangzeb’s army damaged some of the parts of the fort. Golconda fort is undoubtedly one of most magnificent fortress complexes in India. The history of Golconda Fort goes back to early 13th century, when it was ruled by the Kakatiya’s followed by Qutub Shahi kings, who ruled the region in 16th and 17th century. The fortress rests on a granite hill 120 meters high while huge crenellated ramparts surround this structure.

  • The sunset from the top of the fort, is awe-inspiring. One of Hyderabad's most popular and supreme monuments, Golconda Fort allures every visitor with its unparalleled beauty and grandeur.
  • The fort also consists of many mounted cannons and drawbridges. Huge halls, mosques, eight gateways and stables add on to the immense enormity of its magnificent architecture.
  • There is speculation that a secretive tunnel starts from Durbar hall and ends at the foot of the hill. It is believed to be a secret passage to escape in case of any attack. However, no such passage has been found till date.
