Architecture

The entrance of the temple and the entrance steps have greek angles adorning the temple walls. The entire ceiling and pillars of the Babulnath Temple are adorned with beautiful images from Hindu mythology. Lord Babulnath Shivalingam carved in black stone. When rediscovered, 5 original idols were dug out. That of the main Shiva Linga, Ganesh, Hanuman, Parvati and one more. Out of this the first four are in the temple. The fifth one was immersed in the sea because it was broken when it was dug out in the 18th century.

Religious Significance

As per legend, about 300 years back the place where Malabar hills are located today was a big pasture. Majority of the land in that area was owned by a rich goldsmith, Pandurang. He had many cows that were looked after by a cowherd Babul. In the herd there was one cow named Kapila. That cow used to give plenty of milk like other cows, due to the abundance of green grass. One evening, Pandurang saw that Kapila cow did not give even a single drop of milk. He asked his cowherd Babul and was shocked to hear the answer. Babul said that, that was not the first time Kapila had not given milk rather, it was a daily practice. According to him, the Kapila cow daily poured out her entire milk at one particular spot in the field. The next day Pandurang went himself to find out the truth and was amazed to see it happen. He asked his men to dig the place and found a Swayambhu, i.e, a self-existent Shivling carved in black stone. That place is now worshiped at the Babulnath Temple.

History

Babulnath Temple Shiva Linga and Idols were originally consecrated in the 12th century by the then Hindu king Bhimdev of the region. Over a period of time the temple was buried and lost over a period of time. The idols were re-discovered (unearthed) during the period of 1700 to 1780. The first temple was built in the 1780 year. When the first temple was built, the land belonged to the Parsi community. There were 5 Dakhma's (Parsi final resting place) existing in the vicinity. There was a lot of resistance for the Parsi community at that time for the building of the temple. This resistance continued till late 1800 when the issue was settled by the courts in favour of the temple.
