Architecture

Bhavishya Badri Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is situated in Subhai, Uttarakhand at an altitude of 2,744 m (9,003 ft) above sea level. It is the fourth temple complex among the ‘Sapta Badri‘ temples. it’s part of the famous “Sapta Badri” pilgrimage circuit. It extends from Satapanth to Nandaprayag in the Alaknanda river valley. In ancient times, the path to the temple went through the Badri van (Forest of berries). Hence, the suffix ‘Badri‘ is added to the seven holy shrines of Lord Vishnu. Bhavishya Badari is present on the way from Tapovan to Lata in the Niti valley. Bhavishya badri temple was built in North Indian style of architecture. It is said to be the next abode of Lord Vishnu, and almost alluding to that is the very fact that the temple is aptly named Bhavishya which means Future. According to the popular legends, the next era will see Lord Vishnu making this his new seat as the two monitions Nar and Narayan will break and block all paths to Badrinath Temple.

Religious Significance

Bhavishya Badri also referred to as Bhabisya Badri literally suggests the “Future Abode of Lord Badrinath”. According to a Hindu legend, when Guru Adi Shankaracharya took Badri Vishal from Tapta Kund, a celestial announcement was made. According to the prophecy, when Kal Yuga will befall on mankind, the mountains of Nara and Narasimha will block the route to Badrinath. When the shrine will become inaccessible, Lord Badri will appear here. Therefore ‘Bhavishya Badri’ as it will be the new place of worship of Lord Badrinath.

According to another folk beliefs, Lord Vishnu used to live in Tibet but when residents there started consuming meat, alcohol and became chaotic, then Lord Vishnu left Tibet and started searching a proper place for his residence. While his search in the Himalayas, he liked this place and promised that he will make this place his future home (Future in Hindi means Bhavishya), since then this places is called Bhavishya Badri.

The temple Narsingh, located at Joshimath has a beautifully carved statue of Lord Narsingh carrying a sword. As per the traditions, the arm carrying that sword is getting thinner year by year, and in Kaliyug this arm will breakdown.
