The main deity of this temple is Kotilingeshwara, who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Here deity Shivalinga has a height of 33 mts (108 ft).

  • 90 Lakh Siva Linga’s were installed in the temple complex.
  • The Tallest Linga in the compound is of 108 ft high and Nandi statue is of 35 ft high.
  • Kotilingala Temple is well known for housing the tallest Shiva Linga in the world The temple also has statues of all three trimurties together and this is the only place where we can see them together, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.

Dress Code

  • For men the dress code is Shirt & Trouser, Dhoti or Pyjamas with upper cloth.
  • For women the preferred dress code is saree or half-saree with blouse or chudidhar with pyjama and upper cloth.
  • These rules are applicable for foreigners also. Shorts, mini-skirts, middies, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans and short-length T-shirts are not allowed.
  • Pilgrims/visitors will not be allowed inside the temple if dress code is not followed.

Architecture

The project involves an establishment of one crore Shiva lingas hence it is named Kotilingeshwara. The kannada words “Koti” means One Crore and “Lingeshwara” means Shiva Linga. This temple has a 3 tier Rajagopuram.

Religious Significance

It is believed that when the epic battle Ramayana was over, there were lakhs of people who dies in the battle. When Rama attained victory, he travelled to Rameswaram and in Dhanushkodi, he installed a Shivalinga and prayed there. These prayers were performed for the people who laid their lives during the battle and to provide moksha to them. It is believed that Kotilingeshwara temple was built keeping in mind the same culture of peace, divinity and prosperity and pray against the evil influence on human. It is said that Swamy Sambha Shivamurthy saw Lord Shiva in his dreams. Later, he decided to construct a Shiva temple.

History

This temple is built in 1980 by Swami Sambha Shivamurthy.
