Architecture

Dongargarh has derived its name from two words-'Dongar' meaning 'mountains' and 'Garh' meaning 'Fort". Maa Bamleshwari Temple has a simple architecture with Golden color and has a pond named as Bamleshwari. Devotees here have to climb a flight of 1100 stairs to reach this holy destination. This particular temple is referred as Badi Bamleshwari and there is another temple at the ground level, known as the Chotti Bamleshwari, situated at a distance of ½ km from the main temple complex.

Religious Significance

Legend conveys that after the death of Maadhavnal and Kaamkandala, Raja Vikramaditya had felt guilty as he thought that he was responsible for Kaamkandala committing suicide. Then the Raja underwent deep anguish and started constant worship, resulting in Maa Bagulamukhi Devi appearing before him. Raja Vikramaditya then requested the goddess to make both Maadhavnal and Kaamkandala alive again and also asked Maa Bagulamukhi Devi to reside at the temple. Since then it has been believed that Maa Bagulamukhi Devi is present here. As time passed by the years the name got transformed from Maa Bagulamukhi to Maa Bamlai to Maa Bamleshwari as it has been known today.

The legend goes that around 2500 years ago, Raja Veersen, a local king, was childless and upon the suggestions of his royal priests performed puja to the gods. Within a year, the queen gave birth to a son whom they named Madansen. Raja Veersen considered this a blessing of Lord Shiva and Parvati and constructed a temple here. In the temple of Dongargarh, king Vikramaditya went for suicide but Devi Bamleshwari came and stopped him to do this act.

History

Maa Bamleshwari Temple was built by King Veerasen. It is an ancient temple, details on the construction of the currently temple structure are not available.
