Religious Significance
According to the legend, the queen of Puri thought of offering 64 pauti’s Bhoga to Lord Jagannath. Gundicha, the queen thus sought the permission of lord. Lord Jagannath ordered the king in dream to worship Maa Hingula for managing the unique kitchen. The king of puri went to Vidarbha and sought the help of King Nala to bring Devi Hingula to Puri. He agreed to this and the king of Puri started his journey from Vidarbha. The route from Vidarbha to Puri was probably through Raipur, Sambalpur and Talcher. These places were full of forest and were inaccessible. There was sporadic habitation. When the king reached Gopalgarh, it became evening and he took rest near Singhada River near Gopalgarh. One strange thing happened at night and Devi Hingula vanished from there. One voice from space was heard saying that Gopalgarh will be the place of worship of Goddess Hingula, but the place of action will be Shri Mandir kitchen at Purl.
From that day Gopalgarh became famous for Hingula Pitha. Goddess Hirigula at Gopalgarh being a primitive Shaktipith, special worships are being offered throughout the year. However the main worship of Maa Hingula is done on the 14th day of the bright phase of the moon in the month of Chaitra (April). A special worship is offered to the Goddess on every Thursday of the month of Chaitra. Before 7 to 9 days of the festival, the Goddess is worshipped on the pendal of deity Kuteisuni which is called Jantal Puja.
