Architecture
There is also a story behind the name of the God. Lord Krishna rode the chariot of warrior arjuna during a battle. Hence people call him Parthasarathy. Mahavishnu Temple has a 4 tier Rajagopuram and another gopuram is 2 tiered, Dhwajasthambham is covered with metal flag. This temple is built in Kerala style of architecture and built temple pond with Granite. Temple has a Namaskara Mandapam and the mandapa roofs looks like a pyramid. The outer wall has places for lamps and also there is a rectangular wall around the temple.
Religious Significance
According to the legends, Pandavas left for pilgrimage after crowning Parikshit. They visited Kerala and each of the brothers installed idols of Lord Vishnu on the banks of Pamba river and nearby places and offered worship. Thrichittatt Maha Vishnu temple by Yudhishthira, Puliyur Mahavishnu temple by Bheema, Aranmula by Arjuna, Thiruvanvandoor Mahavishnu temple by Nakula and Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Temple by Sahadeva. According to the legends, Arjuna brought the idol in Aranmula in a raft made of six pieces of bamboo and hence the place got the name Aranmula (six pieces of bamboo). It is said that Arjuna built this temple to redeem the sin of killing Karna on the battlefield.
History
Maha Vishnu temple was built in between 6th - 9th centuries A.D. by Pandava brother Arjuna and renovated in 18 century. Travancore kings are the contributors for this temple.
