Architecture

Lord Shiva along with Parvati came to Kashi before Vishnu to grant him his wish. Vishnu dug a kund (well) on the bank of Ganga for the bath of the couple. When Lord Shiva was bathing a Mani (Jewel) from his earring fell into the kund, hence the name Manikarnika (Mani-Beads Karnam-Ear Angad-Ornament). It is one of the oldest ghats in Varanasi. The Manikarnika Ghat is mentioned in a Gupta inscription of 5th century.

Religious Significance

According to Hindu mythology, this ghat has close links to Sati and it is said that when Sati sacrificed her life and set her body ablaze and died, Lord Shiva took her body to the Himalaya. At that time Sati Mata’s ear ornament had fallen at this spot. Wherever Mata Sati’s body pieces fell was established as a Shakti Peeth and is considered Holy places to visit for the Hindus. As Hindu mythology says, the dead who are cremated there receive moksha or release from the cycle of rebirth driven by the law of karma.
