Architecture

The main attraction here is a well like structure made of 1.2 meters thick wall with a diameter of 3 meters. The exterior provides niches containing 0.6 meters high stucco images of a linga decorated with garland, four armed Vishnu, Nagi image, Ganesha twisted with snakes around his body and six armed dancing Shiva. Unfortunately, most of the images have now disappeared from their art style belongs to the Gupta period. The minor structures such as alter platform and shrines etc, seem to be constructed for the religious and ritual purpose related to serpent worship.

Religious Significance

People refer to it as belonging to the time of King Jarasandha of Mahabharata. According to the locals, Raja Maharaj of Rajagriha used to worship Jarasandha in this temple. In the Mahabharata you may have read that Jarasandha had a marital relationship with Krishna's maternal uncle Kamsa. Bhima had killed Jarasandha in Gadayudha at the behest of Krishna for supporting Kansa.

History

The temple was built in 4th century A.D. in Gupta period.
