Architecture

The temple was built in Medieval style of architecture. There is a thirtham named as River Ganga. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple has a tangential statue of the serpent-serpent, worshiped as Nagavasuki. It is believed that the Mansaputras of the Supreme Father Brahma installed Nagavasuki as an idol here. The stones present here are said to be ancient even from the 10th century. Ganesh, Parvati, the statue of Bhishma Pitamah (lying on the bed) and the idol of Lord Shiva are also installed in the temple premises.

Religious Significance

Aurangzeb was unconscious due to fear - In the Mughal period, when Hindu religious sites were being completely destroyed. At that time there was also an attempt to break the Nagavasuki temple. However, when the Mughal soldiers did not succeed in this and its fame reached the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. So he himself came to Prayag and climbed to break the Nagavasuki temple. The temple priests state that Aurangzeb reached the temple from the banks of the Ganges coast and, taking out his sword, attacked the Nagasuki statue, suddenly the divine form of Nagavasuki was revealed. Aurangzeb trembled at seeing his formidable and terrible appearance and fainted with fear.

How did Nag Vasuki come to Prayag - Detailed mention of Nag Vasuki and this temple is found in the Patala Khanda and Shrimad Bhagwat of Padma Purana. According to the legend, in the churning of the sea, the gods and asuras wrapped Nagavasuki in the Sumeru mountain and used them as a rope. Nagavasuki's body was heavily rubbed due to the churn and when the churning ended, his body started burning. Vasuki went to the Mandrachal mountain to remove the burn, but his body burn did not end. Then Nag Vasuki told Lord Vishnu about his suffering and asked for a solution to end the burning. Lord Vishnu told Nagavasuki to go to Prayag and drink the nectar of Saraswati river there and take the same rest, it will end all his suffering.

History

It is believed that around 10th century an old temple must have existed. The Maratha King Shridhar Bhonsle constructed the present temple in 18th Century.
