Architecture
The temple gives a marvel example of Pratihara Architecture. A Rangamandapa stands on four pillars, Originally the Rangamandapa had three pancharathas which housed three different deities. Of the three pancharathas, the two on the sides have been destroyed. Only the one in the middle with the Shiva linga remains and retains its original altitude with the shikhara still intact. The Jangha is decorated with sculptures of Harihararka in the East, Narasimha in the South and Tripurantaka in the South. The doors bear ornamented figures of Natesa while the projections carry figures of Surasndaris and Dikpalas. Besides, the ceiling of the Rangamandapa is designed with Padmasila and sculptures of Surasundaris and Gandharvas. In an inscription dated 961 A.D., it has been stated that he was a local Pratihara feudatory. The site where the Neelkanth temple is situated, was anciently known as Rajyapura and later it was known as Paranagar.
Religious Significance
Legend has it that the Pandavas went to Kashi and requested Bholenath to follow along. So Bhole put a condition that I will walk, but where I wake up in the morning, I will have to set up there. The Pandavas went with Mahadev by giving a promise. They wanted to establish a Shivalinga on the banks of the Baan Ganga river in Bairath (Virat Nagar), but the Para Nagar lying on the road woke up. According to the promise, the Pandavas established Shivling in Para Nagar (Neelkanth). Also made a stepwell for the consecration of Bhole the same night. The Pandavas worshiped the Akhand Jyoti Jala in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple which is still burning today.
According to Hindu scriptures, the churning of sea was resulted in giving out both Nectar and Poison. He was the only one who could consume the Poison in order to save the world, so he did and got a bluethroat due to the poison he ingested.
