Architecture

The recesses on either side carry the figures of the Yaksha (Gomukha) and the Yakshi (Chakresvari) at the lower ends while above them are shown five Jinas in successive panels from the bottom upwards. The second Jina on the other side stands in Khadgasana while all others are seated in meditation. The top two rows carry the figures of five and eight seated Jinas respectively (top to bottom). Most of the sculptures in Haryana are found broken or partially broken while this sculpture is intact and very beautifully carved. Most probably this image was buried due to the fear of being desecrated by the foreign invaders. Stylistically, it may be placed in circa 10th century A.D. Almost a foot in height, it shows the Yakshi of the first Tirthankara seated in lalitasana. Her folded left leg in supported by anthropomorphic Garuda. Her splayed right foot touches the triratha pedestal by the forepart and the heel is raised slantingly.

The twelve‐armed Yakshi bears a high bun on the head adorned in the center with a discus‐like motif. She wears an ekavali, armlets, wristlets, undergarment secured by an elaborate waistband, etc. She supports chakras on the pointing fingers of the uppermost pair of hands in a horizontal fashion while the additional left hands hold the chakras almost en face except in the lowermost left hand which carries a citrus. One of the backhands on either side probably carried thunderbolt as per the Digambara Jaina tradition. The normal right hand is held in Abhaya and the next addition is disposed in varada‐mudra. One hand carries thunderbolt as pointed out above and other additional right hands seem to support the wheels. Just above her head is depicted a miniature Jina figure in meditation. Garland‐bearing Vidyadharas are hovering on either side of her head and two small figures are shown in Anjali mudra standing in profile on the receding recesses of the pedestal.

Religious Significance

Sun was upon the head and the heat was intense. As such, October month marks the beginning of winters but till now there was no sign of cold. Around 2 in the noon, in scorching heat Ranjeet Malik was working hard in his field. He was digging a sand dunes suddenly his hoe struck against a stone. Despite being tired a curious Ranjeet now started hitting his hoe around that stone while muttering something under his breath. Then he stopped and remove the sand around the stone with his hand. When he excavated then two statues come out. Ranjeet was not so knowledgeable that he could understand whose idol is. He put that idol and coherence in his work. The next day when he arrived at his field he found that the saline water of his well is sweet and fresh today. Earlier all villagers curse Ranjeet to fill up that well with sand because of its saline water.

Ranjeet asked some people to taste that water then all were shocked. All were speculating about the well. They were speculating that what really would be happened that the well which have saline water starts producing sweet freshwater. Villagers were fictionalizing that might be any saint came here and from his blessing water become fresh. After listening to villagers, Ranjeet recalled that he found two statues on that day. Might be this miracle happened due to those sculpt. He immediately left all his work he ran towards the sculpt and he told the whole story to the sensible man of the village that how he got these statues. After seeing those sculpt, that man told him that these idols are of Jain religion. One idol is of Lord Adinatha and the other one is of Mata Chakreshwari Devi.

This deed spread like fire and after hearing this matter people of Jain society reached ranila. After inspecting those idols it was discovered that those idols were 1500 years old. Jain society decided to build a temple at that place where the sculpt founded. Ranjeet also allowed them and permit without any hesitation. Years after this incident, temple work started and now a grand temple is standing there where the Jain community people come.
