Architecture

The architecture of the temple is quite artistic and beautiful and is a good representation of Indian tradition and culture. A majestic Kalash is mounted at a stunning height of 103 feet or the top of the temple. The weight of the Kalash is more than 3 tones and it is made from a special kind of milky white marble that is curated from the bowels of Arasur mines. The marble has been plated with pure Swarna (gold) and it carries the sacred flag of Ambaji Mata and the majestic Trishul. The principal temple of Ambaji is small with a sprawling Mandap and the holy Gokh of Mata Amba in the Garbh. A huge Cachar stands in front of the Garbh and it is in this Cachar that the traditional worship of Ambaji Maa is performed at this very Cachar. The main temple or Nij Mandir is constructed in front of the old temple. This temple has a huge significance for the worshippers of Shakti Sampraday. Not only is Nij Mandir famous for being the seat of cosmic superpower that protects the universe but is also widely lauded for its beautiful architecture and intricate religious carvings. The total area of the temple is 20 meters to 950 meters and this excludes two structures, old Haven Shala and New Havan Shala. The Nij Mandir is moderately sized and there is no idol or photograph of the Goddess in there.

The inner sanctum of the temple has silver-plated doors. There is a gokh, or niche, in the wall on which is fixed an old-plated marble inscription of the Viso Yantra, a Vedic text on sacred geometry. At a short distance from the Ambaji temple is a large rectangular kund, with steps on all its four sides, called Mansarovar. In front of the Ambica shrine, in a pit-like place, there are idols of Nageswarar, Hanuman, Nagarajar. The hundi is 10 feet long made of copper. Gold is also used in the rebuilding of the temple. At the peak of the temple, 358 gold Kalas are installed.

Mansarovar Temple - Mansarovar is behind the main temple. There are two temples on two sides of this holy tank, one is of Mahadev and another is Ajay Devi, who is believed to be the sister of Mata Ambaji. The visitors and devotees use to take holy bath in this Mansarovar. It is also very important source of history of Ambaji that there is an ancient Monument of Scripts Writings and Old Carvings on Rock Stone "Shilalekh" of Raja Maldev, dated Hindu Calendar Samvat year 1415, in Ajay Devi Mandir. The Temple Trust has also undertaken the renovation projects in respect of Holy Mansarovar and its temples and surroundings are behind the main Temple.

Religious Significance

As per the Legend, Sati Devi daughter of Daksh Prajapati married Lord Siva against her father's will. Daksh thought of taking revenge on this Son-in-law and decided to perform Yagna by inviting all Devas except His daughter and Son-in-law. Sati Devi on knowing this reached her maternal home advising her father. Daksh insulted Sati in front of the guests. Sati immolated herself in the Yoga Agni. On knowing this, Lord Siva raised high and ordered Veerabhadra to kill Daksh. Veerabhadra along with Kali and other Siva Ganas reached the Yagna place and killed Daksha. Lord Siva on collecting Sati's corpse danced the dance of destruction. Lord Vishnu to avoid destruction, sent his Discus and made Sati's body into pieces. The body parts fell across the Indian Sub-continent which emerged as Shakti Peetas. It is believed that Sati's heart fell here.

As per another Legend, the original Danta temple was worshipped by devotees till the King Danta fervently requested the Goddess to reside in Danta. The Goddess granted his request with one condition that the king should not look back even one time till he reached the temple of Danta. In case he failed to do so the Goddess would not shift. The king accordingly led the Goddess down the hill towards the site of Danta. The anklets of the Goddess tinkled and seemed to signal her movements behind the king. However, the king could not resist his curiosity and peeped back for a small look. The Goddess (true to her word) refused to budge even an inch and the disappointed king had to go away. The place where the Goddess stopped her sojourn was the site of the Ambaji temple. Some pilgrims consider their visit incomplete until they have visited both Ambaji temples.

The tonsuring ceremony for Lord Krishna when He was a three-year child in Gokhulam was celebrated in this temple by Nandagopa and Yasodha. Since then, only male children’s tonsuring ceremony is observed by parents in this temple. It is not followed by the aged and female children. The belief is that the male child would enjoy a prosperous life filled with wisdom as Lord Krishna if this ceremony for male children is celebrated the next day of its birthday.

History

It is believed that this temple is more than twelve hundred years old and that the temple was built by Vallabhbhai ruler, Suryavansh emperor Arun Sen during the fourth century. This temple has been rebuilt by the state government.

Mansarovar Temple - It is said to have been constructed by Shri Tapishanker, a Nagar Devotee of Ambaji from Ahmedabad, during the year 1584 to 1594.
