Architecture

The Nartiang located in the Jaitia Hills of Meghalaya, which is known as the garden of Monoliths, as the place is composed of many scattered monoliths (stone pillars). At the basement of the temple, there is a Boli Garbha where the sacrificing ritual is followed which is continued to the river forming a tunnel. The Durga temple houses the ancient guns of the Kings, which is a diversified look when compared to other temples as no other temple shows this kind of look.

Religious Significance

To the ancient times, the history of the temple dates back. The temple is associated with an interesting mythological legend according to which once during a sacrificial feast the father of Goddess Parvati, Daksha did not invite lord Shiva, his son-in-law. At the insult of her husband, Parvati felt very humiliated and depressed and hence immolated herself at the sacrificial fire at her parents home. Lord Shiva when came to know about the incident he became furious and in rage carried the dead body of his wife on his shoulders and began performing the dance of destruction. Lord Vishnu in order to pacify him cut down Durga's dead body into 51 pieces with his flying Chakra or discus. These pieces fell in various parts of the world that later developed into temples and religious places. At Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills the left thigh of Goddess Durga fell. It is for this reason that the Goddess is known as 'Jainteshwari'.

History

A 500 year old Durga temple, located among huge monoliths and ruins from an era gone by, defines the Nartiang Durga Temple. Devi's left thigh is believed to have fallen at Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills. Hence the Goddess here is known as Jainteshwari. The Jaintia king Jaso Manik (1606–1641) had married Lakshmi Narayana, the daughter of the Hindu Koch king Nara Narayana. It is believed that it was Lakshmi Narayana who had influenced the Jaintia Royalty to embrace Hinduism. King Dhan Manik had made Nartiang the summer capital of the Jaintia Kingdom about 600 years ago. One night, the goddess appeared to him in a dream and informed him of the significance of the place and asked him to build a temple in Her honour. Following this, the Jainteshwari temple in Nartiang was established. The strategic location of the temple and presence of weapons like cannons suggests that the temple must have been part of a fort of the Jaintia Kings.
