Architecture
The temple was built in Dravidian style of architecture. It does not have a Raja gopuram, the temple's gateway tower and has a flat gateway. A single granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines and halls. Lord Vishnu graces in the temple under the Gupta Vimana (tower) in the sanctum sanctorum Kumudha Vimaanam. The Artha mandapam houses the festival image of Aravindalochanar with the images of Sridevi and Bhudevi on either of his sides. The Maha mandapa has shrines for Senai Mudaliyar, Garuda, Venugopala, Manavalamamunigal and Azhwars. The image is made of Saligrama stone and there is a koneru named as Varuna theertham, Thamiraparani.
Religious Significance
As per legends, a Rishi named Athreya Suprabha Rishi maintained a yaga Salai. When he was cleaning the Yaga Salai, he found a bright equilibrium and a bow. On touching those two, it changed into beautiful men and a woman. They both explained him that they were changed into the tarasu and the bow because of the Poorvajenma Sabham, his touch gave them both sabhavimocchan and got Paramapadha Mukthi. Since, this sthalam is named as “Thulam Vil Mangalam” and as the years passed the name changed to “Tholai villi Mangalam”.
History
The temple was built 1000 years ago by Pandyas and expanded by Madurai Nayaks. The temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil Canon of the Azhwar Saints from the 6th–9th centuries A.D.
