Religious Significance
According to a legend, Lord Vishnu had come down to divine marriage of Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi. Unfortunately, the marriage took place before his arrival, owing to which he turned back from river Vaigai banks. This temple is the place where Lord Alagar, a form of Lord Vishnu resides. Sage Suthapas was turned into a frog by a curse from Sage Durvasa for ignoring him while bathing in the Nurupa Ganga river a few kilometers up in the Azhagarkoil hills. The lord is said to have relieved him of this curse here at Azhagarkoil.
History
The temple was built in 4th century A.D. by God Dharmadevan. Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan, who reigned during the period 1251-1270 A.D. beautified the 'vimana' of the 'sanctum sanctorum' with gold plates. Later, during the reign of the Vijayanagar king Krishnadeva Raya, the temple was endowed with revenues from two villages for conducting regular festivals. Sri Koorathalagar, a chief disciple of Bhagavath Ramanujar got back his eye sight in Alagar Koil, by composing Sundararajastvam in praise of Sri Alagar. According to historical records, Malayadhwaja Pandyan, son of Kulasekhara Pandyan, who is said to have established the Pandyan kingdom, appears to be the earliest known monarch who patronised this temple.
