Goddesses Sri Alankara Nayaki and Sri Soundarya Nayaki are consorts of Sri Kalyana Pasupatheeswarar. The shrine of Soundara Nayaki faces South direction while the other shrine of Alankaravalli, faces East direction.

Architecture
The temple is facing East direction and built in Chola style of architecture with two gopurams. The 7-tier Raja gopuram (main tower) is 120 feet high and is adorned with stucco images of mythological characters and the second gopuram is a 5-tier one. This temple’s flag hoist is made up of rock stone. One side of the flag, famous sage Pughazh Chola Nayanar is holding a plate towards the god with his head on the plate as an offering and the other side of the flag Shivalinga is there. There is a sculpture of Cow which is licking that Shivalinga. In the small prakaram around the garbagriha the walls are adorned with the images of Vighneswara, Ardhanareeswara, Brahma and Durga. Lords Nataraja and Dakshinamurthi are in the Ghoshta wall. From the inscriptions, it can be inferred that this temple existed during the reign of the King Rajendra Chola (1012-54 A.D.) and that he also gifted lands to this temple. There is a 100 pillar hall (mandapam) in front of the shrine and is called Pugazh Chozhar mandapam.
Religious Significance
Legend has it that Siva on sensing the conceit of Brahma as the creator of the world, sent Kamadhenu to Vanji forest in Karur to take up the duty of creation and instructed her to worship the Siva lingam hidden in an anthill at the forest. When Kamadhenu was performing the abishekam to the lingam with its milk, her hoof accidentally hit the lingam and injured it. The scar left on the lingam is seen on its back even now as a depression than Kamadhenu pleaded guilty. The lord told her that he will be hailed as Pasupatheeswarar as she worshipped him at this place thus according a special status to Kamadhenu. Pleased with this, Kamadhenu continued the work of creation. Meanwhile, realizing his mistakes Brahma took up severe penance worshipping Lord Shiva in order to get back his place in Satya Loka. Pleased with his prayers, the lord restored the power of creation back to Brahma and took Kamadhenu along with him. Later on a temple came to be built in that place.
Lord Brahma became very proud of his position as the creator of the World and Lord Shiva decided to teach him a lesson in humility. During the same time, Kamadenu was also looking to obtain Moksham so Lord Shiva instructed Sage Naradar to ask Kamadenu to go to earth and perform penance in a “Vanji” forest. (Vanji is a tree that is indigenous to the Indian sub-continent). Following these instructions, Kamadenu reached Karur, since it was at that time fully covered by Vanji trees. Kamadenu found that the lingam at this place was fully covered by an anthill. She cleared the anthill and started worshipping the lord here. Incidentally when Kamadenu was performing abishekam, the hoof hit the lingam and that impression can still be seen on the lingam. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva blessed her with Lord Brahma’s role - the power of creation. Lord Brahma realized his mistake and pleaded to Lord Shiva to forgive him. Lord Shiva forgave him and reinstated his position of the creator of the world. In recognition to Kamadenu’s dedication, Lord Shiva said that he would be worshipped as Pasupathi Nathar in Karur (Pasu meaning cow).
History
The temple was constructed during the Chola period. Saint Thiruganasambhandar, who has visited this temple and sung in praise of the lord. Those songs have been catalogued under second Thirumurai. Out of the Saivite quartet, Sambandar alone has visited this temple. Saint Arunagirinathar has sung in praise of Shanmugha and this Sthalam in seven of his Thirupugazh pieces. Lord of the temple is praised in the hymns of Saints Tirugnana Sambandar, Karuvurar-Tiruvisaipa and Arunagirinathar in his Tirupugazh. This is the ninth temple of Lord Shiva in the Kongunadu region praised in Thevaram hymns.
