Architecture
Origin of the Name - Mother Meenakshi, born as the daughter of devout Malayadwaja Pandya used to play with her friends (Thozhi in Tamil) in Pillayar Palayam now Avaniapuram. When she was leaving the place after wedding with Lord Sundareswara, the Thozhis requested her to stay there in her wedding form and bless them. Responding to their wish, Mother Bala Meenambica chose the place to stay with Lord Sundareswara. The place is known as Sri Kalyana Sundareswarar-Bala Meenambica temple.
The temple is facing East direction and built in Dravidian style of architecture. The Fish symbol is carved in the pillars. There is a koneru named as Surya theertham.
Religious Significance
A shiva devotee came to the house of one Anna Thatha who also was a Shiva devotee. The former said that he would be back to the house after his worship in Madurai temple as there was no temple for him in the place. The devotee did not return to Anna Thatha though it was too late at night. Lord appeared in the dream of Anna Thatha and disclosed that he alone came to his house and asked him to renovate the temple that existed earlier, now in a bad state. Anna Thatha built the temple himself and made it ready for public worship.
History
The temple was built 1000 years ago by Anna Thatha. Thirugnanasambandar came here to sing Pillai Thamizh to cure the disease of a Pandya King.
