Architecture
Origin of the Name - Raavana prayed to Lord Shiva to restore his son and forgive his mistake. Thus the name of the Lingam is ‘Kutram Porutha Nadhar'. Hanuman was disappointed by Rama when he started worshiping another lingam while he had gone on the same quest tried to destroy it with his tail. Enraged Lord Rama cursed him and said he could get relief by performing penance to Lord Shiva in Kanmapuram (Thalaignairu).
The temple is facing East direction and built in Dravidian style of architecture, which has a small 3-tier Raja gopuram facing East direction welcomes you and once inside the view of the 3 level glorious sanctum sanctorum over powers you. There is a Dhwaja stambham placed infront of the temple. This temple has 4 prakarams and the stucco images on the vimanams adorning the sanctum are of great beauty. There are 12 stone inscriptions in this temple which date back to the periods of Chola kings Kulothungan-III, Konerikondan and Thiribuvana Chakravarthy Rajarajan and Vijayanagara king Pratapakrishna Devarayar. The front hall (mandapam) of this temple is designed to look like the forehead of a bat (“Vovval Nethi Mandapam”). There are 8 theerthams – Vinayaka theertham, Surya theertham, Vasishta theertham, Hanuman theertham, Nitpa theertham, Sanga theertham, Porthamarai theertham, Senkazhuneer thadagam.
Religious Significance
Legend 1 - Indrajit, son of Ravana while young over this place felt his vaahana stall and noticed the temple here at Thirukaruppariyalur. After worshiping it he tried to take it to Srilanka and fell unconscious. Raavana prayed to Lord Shiva to restore his son and forgive his mistake. Thus the name of the lingam is ‘Kutram Porutha Nadhar’ (one who forgave the folly). Another legend is that when Hanuman was disappointed by Rama when he started worshiping another lingam while he had gone on the same quest tried to destroy it with his tail. Enraged Lord Rama cursed him and said he could get relief by performing penance to Lord Shiva in Kanmapuram (Thalaignairu). Happy at the immense benevolence of Shiva by ridding him of the curse Hanuman installed another lingam at the nearby Thirukurakkukka Temple (Also a Paadal Petra Sivasthalam).
Legend 2 - Lord Rama, in order to be relieved off the dosham of killing Ravana during the war, wanted perform Siva pooja. He asked Hanuman to bring a Shivalingam in a few hours time. Hanuman accepted the command and went towards the Northern side. Since he did not return within the stipulated time, Lord Rama created a lingam in the sand, installed it and worshipped. Where Lord Rama performed pooja to Lord Shiva became ‘Rameswaram’. Hanuman was sad to know that the lingam was installed before he returned. And he also pulled that lingam by binding it with his tail, but could not do so. Because of his action, Hanuman was penalized. Lord Rama advised him that if he performed tapasya to Lord Siva, he would get rid off the penalty. Accordingly, Hanuman did tapasya and Lord Shiva appeared before him and said. “ Hanuman! you go to Kanmapuram also called Thalaignayiru and worship. You will be relieved of this curse.” Thus the lord graced him. Hanuman, as directed by the lord, came to Thalaignayiru, worshipped the deity and got free of his curse. Surprised at the immense benevolence of Lord Shiva, he installed a lingam in his own name at the North-Eastern part of this sacred place and began worshipping it. Now, this place is known as ‘Thirukkurakkaa’.
History
The temple was built 1000 years ago by King Vichitraangan. Vasishta, Hanuman and Indra are believed to have worshiped here at Thirukaruppariyalur. Surya’s worship here gave the name ‘Thalaignairu’. 72 maharishis have attained ‘Mukthi’ or liberation after worshipping the deity here. Thirugnanasambandar (7th century C.E.) and Sundarar (8th century C.E.) have rendered Thevaram Hymns for the lord here at Thirukaruppariyalur.
