Religious Significance
Legend : It is believed that the idol of Lord shiva was found by a lady, who belonged to a very low caste named 'Madura'. She had found the idol in the Udbhava state which refers to the form which cannot be shaped by any human being. Hence the name of the temple has been kept MadhurMahaganapathy Temple. However, the main attraction of the temple is the idol of Lord Ganapati. Legends tell us that a small boy had painted the Lords portrait on the walls of the sanctum. The boy was the child of a priest. However, something amazing happened after the drawing was complete. The figure of Lord Ganesh kept becoming bigger and fatter. This was a miracle and since then the Lord has been referred to as BoddhaGanesha. There is also a legend behind this temple. When Tipu Sultan became the emperor of this state, he decided to demolish this temple. Once while visiting the temple, he drank the waters from the well and then a miracle happened. Out of no reason, he decided to change his mind and ordered his pupils not to demolish the Garbhagriha of the main sanctum. However, to show his mark he made a cut on one of the walls of the temple with the help of a sword. Till this date the mark can be vividly seen.
Threat during invasions : In 1784 Tippu Sulthan attacked the place and he planned to ransack the temple. Tippu struck the western roof with his sword but once he took the theertha jala (the holy water) from the temple he became calm and he left the temple without attacking. The deep cut made by his sword is still kept as a historical monument. References of this ancient temple can be seen in the Skanda purana and Brahma purana.
