Architecture
According to history of this temple because of a mistake done by Sri Subrahmanya swamy in his childhood he takes Goddess Parvathi devi's permission to perform penance to get rid of the blemish. Then Subrahmanya swamy did penance in the form of Snake and successfully cleanced himself of the foolishness. The place where Subrahmanya swamy performed penance is now called as Mopidevi. This temple has a 3-tier rajagopuram and a Dhwajastambham is placed inside the temple which was built in typical Dravidian Style of architecture.
Religious Significance
Rishis Sankara, Sanakasa, Sanatkumara, and Sanatsujata who are ardent devotees of Lord Siva and disengaged themselves from this materialistic world and remained naked. Once they visited Mount Kailash (Abode of Lord Siva) to offer prayers to Lord Siva. During this time, Sachi Devi (Wife of Indra Dev), Swaha Devi (Wife of Agni Dev), Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi also arrived in Kailash. Lord Subramanya who was sitting in his mother’s lap snickered innocently on seeing fully dressed Goddesses on one side and nude Rishis on the other side. Goddess Parvati reprimanded Subramanya for his childish act. Realizing the mistake, Lord Subramanya took the permission from his mother and reached the Earth to perform penance. Lord Subramanya did penance in the guise of a Serpent and got relieved from the sin. And the place where the Lord did penance later came to be known as ‘Mopidevi’.
A Potter Parvatalu by name of Mopidevi was a great devotee of Subrahmanya Swamy. One night Lord appeared in his dream and said that a lingam was laying in an anthill in Mopidevi and also showed the direction of the anthill. Next morning Parvatalu informed the villagers about his dream and himself and villagers visited the spot and dug the anthill. To their surprise, they found the Lingam as was told by the Lord in the dream of Parvatalu. They installed the lingam on the anthill (Putta in Telugu).
History
This temple is built in 1783 A.D. by Adusumilli Gangubhotlu. Rishi Veda Vyasa mentioned the sacredness of Mopidevi in Skanda Purana.
