Architecture

Origin of the Name - Long ago, a Cow which was let to graze among these Karai forest, was inspired by the presence of his Holiness Lord Aranganadhar on one of the bushes. From then it started milking of its own on that bush. The Shepherd who found the cow returning with empty teats everyday became furious and was about to destroy the bush with his sickle. When suddenly, his greatness Lord Aranganadhar blessed the vision of the shepherd by appearing before him and inspired him with his presence. When this news reached the members of the Pattar community, they realized the presence of the lord himself in that place and built a temple there glorifying his name.

The temple was built in Dravidian style of architecture and a dhwaja stambham is placed infront of the temple. The Holy water called Brahma theertham blessed by Lord Brahma streams behind the main deity and Holy pond known as Karuda theertham.

Religious Significance

LEGEND 1 - There is an interesting story behind the Karamadai Ranganatha Temple’s beginnings. Garudan, the sacred mount of Lord Vishnu, wanted to have a darshan (vision) of the lord in his wedding attire along with his consort, Goddess Mahalakshmi. Garudan’s wish came true in this place and then Lord Vishnu consented to stay on here to bless the local people. However, over the years, the stone statue went underground and a dense forest of Kara trees grew around it. Many centuries later, a Cowherd from the Thottiya community who live in Karamadai, noticed that his Cow often disappeared to a particular area in the dense undergrowth in order to shed her milk. One day, the Cowherd attempted to cut the thorny bushes surrounding this place when, to his amazement, blood started to gush forth. A stone resembling a lingam was discovered. That same night the lord appeared in the Cowherd’s dream and asked him to apply Chandana Kaapu (sandalwood paste). When the thottiya did so he found that it was a beautiful Ranganathar.

LEGEND 2 - A British engineer wanted to construct a railway line near this temple, which would have disrupted the temple and its festivals. The locals prayed to Lord Ranganatha to find a solution. The lord came in a white horse in the dreams of the British engineer who changed his mind and the direction of the railway line. He also donated a wooden white horse to the temple. To this day, the Utsava Moorthy (processional figure) is taken on processions on this white horse.

History

Thirumalai Nayakkan was cured of a terrible disease and he built the temple structure for Lord Ranganatha at Karamadai. Karikala Chola and the Mysore king, Krishnaraja Wodeyar are believed to have made contributions to this Ranganatha Temple. Thirumalai Nayakkar of Madurai built the temple walls and several mandapams (halls) in and around the temple.
