Architecture

The temple is facing East direction and built in Dravidian style of architecture. It has a 5-tiered Raja gopuram (gateway tower) with 90 Feet (27 Meters) tall and enshrined within a granite wall. The temple has two inscriptions dating from the Nayak period. There are inscriptions from various ruling empires on the contributions made to the maintenance of the temple. The outer halls and the sculptures were included during the period of Thirumalai Nayak (1623-59) in 1629. Thirumalai Nayakar of Madurai is said to have commissioned the exquisite sculptures dating back to around 1640 C.E. There are references to the Northern house at Thaadi Kombu in culverts relating to Sundara Pandya, a Pandya king who ruled Madurai sometime between the 9th and 12th centuries C.E. This is an indication that the temple dates back to a time prior to the rule of Sundara Pandyan and is possibly more than 1000 years old. A damaged inscription in the temple from the period of Rama Raya is found in the Garuda mandapa. An inscription in the Sundara Pandya mandapam indicates the conduct of marriage festival of Kallazhagar in Madurai. Other inscription mentions that the people of Madurai consider Thadikombu as their northern settlement.

Religious Significance

Soundararaja Perumal Temple is associated with many interesting stories. ‘Mandookam’ means ‘frog’ in Sanskrit. A sage was once cursed to become a frog and became known as Sage Mandookya. He performed severe penances for Lord Vishnu in this place called Thadikombu to be cured of the curse. During his penance, a demon called Thalaasuran was harassing him. Responding to the prayers of the Sage, Lord Vishnu in his form as Madurai Kallazhagar destroyed the demon and protected the Rishi. The sage requested Vishnu to remain here as Soundararaja.

History

The temple was built in 16th century A.D. by Atchuda Devarayar, a descendant of Krishna Deva Raya. It was renovated by the Vijayanagar kings, Achudeva Raya and his brother Ramadeva Raya.
