Interesting Facts

  • The principal linga is slightly slanting on a side with a scar caused by a Hunter.
  • The stage or platform of the linga called Avudayar is of two parts connected with Vishyu and Somasundara part joined together. This is a strange aspect of the temple not found in other places.

Dress Code

  • For men the dress code is Shirt & Trouser, Dhoti or Pyjamas with upper cloth.
  • For women the preferred dress code is saree or half-saree with blouse or chudidhar with pyjama and upper cloth.
  • These rules are applicable for foreigners also. Shorts, mini-skirts, middies, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans and short-length T-shirts are not allowed.
  • Pilgrims/visitors will not be allowed inside the temple if dress code is not followed.

Architecture

The temple is facing East direction and the entrance way of the temple is South side. Temple is built in Dravidian style of architecture, which has a 3-tiers Raja gopuram with single praharam. This temple has approximately ten types of inscriptions. Those inscriptions’s copies are kept in Government records (i.e) South Indian inscriptions the year was 1888 and the number of that inscriptions is from 42 to 51. The front mandapam and the Thiru Nanthi mandapam is located opposite the entrance of the temple. There is a koneru named as Amandukam.

Religious Significance

Creator Brahmma was telling about the mystery of his creations being different from one another. Sage Sukha, noted Shiva devotee, hearing the secret conversation, informed the same to Saraswathi, Goddess of wisdom. Angry Brahmma cursed Sukha to become a Parrot and said that he would be relieved of the curse. If he prays to Lord Shiva in the Papanasam region (present temple area). Sage Sukha turning a Parrot, came here with a huge number of Parrots and began praying to Lord Shiva. A Hunter came to the spot and wanted to drive away the Parrots which hid themselves in an Ant-hill. The hunter cut the Ant-hill when Parrot Sukha spread his wing to protect the Sivalinga in. Parrot Sukha ws also attacked causing profuse bleeding and death. Blood also oozed out from the linga. Realizing the truth, the hunter killed himself. Sage Sukha getting his own form, prayed to the lord to be here in the name of Sukhavaneswara which the lord oblige.

History

The temple was built in 13th century A.D. by Mamannan Sundara Pandiyan and contributed by rulers of Cheras, Cholas and Pandiyas.
