Architecture

Sonagiri Temple is one of the primary pilgrimage places for the Jain Followers. The word “Sonagiri” means “The Golden Peak”.  According to Jain texts, since the time of Chandraprabhu (the 8th Teerthankar), five and half crores of ascetic saints have achieved moksha (liberation) here. The place is considered sacred by devotees. There is a 3 metres (9.8 ft) rock cut image of Chandraprabhu dating back to 5th to 6th century. There are a total of 103 temples with 77 on hill and 26 in village. The Samavsharan of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu came here seventeen times. Nang, Anang, Chintagati, Poornachand, Ashoksen, Shridatta, Swarnbhadra and many other saints achieved salvation here. This is a unique place known as Laghu Sammed Shikhar covering the area of 132 acres of two hills. There are 77 Jain temples with high spires, Temple number 57 is the main temple among them. Acharya Shubh Chandra and Bhartrihari lived and worked here for spiritual achievements.

This pilgrimage site is considered as sacred to Digambar Jains. The temple has a beautiful large verandah with multicolored decoration motifs and various shapes of rubies, mirrors and very fine gold artifacts and a beautiful attempt to present the various mythological and mythological areas and pilgrimage areas in Jainism, whether it is Swadhyaya Room or Saraswati Room or Hallmark. In the huge verandah of the temple, beautiful floral letters have been carved on all the columns and walls made of sandstone. According to religious inscriptions, Chandraprbhu, the 8th Teerthankar of Jainism with five & half crores saints have attained salvation (Moksha) on the sacred mountain of Sonagiri. There are more than 77 beautiful Jain temples devoted to various Teerthankars of Jainism. Among them, Temple number 57 is the most famous and attractive which belongs to 8th Teerthankar.

History

There is a rock cut statue of Chandraprabhu in the main temple, dating back to 5th-6th century, which further cements the importance of this saint in the establishment of Sonagiri as a Jain pilgrimage.
