Architecture

Sri Kedareshwara Temple is facing in East direction and constructed in Hoysala Style of architecture. The outlay of the main shrine (Vimana) is star-shaped (stellate) with two smaller shrines that have perforated windows (called Jali, literally, sieve) on the sides. The image of the deity of worship is missing in all three sanctums. Four star shaped pillars on either side of entrance towards Navaranga, four bell shaped pillars. On the top you can make out that the ceiling of the Navaranga Mantapa is well decorated and domical bay ceiling supported by lathe turned pillars. The temple has three shrines, the three sanctums are connected to a central hall (mahamantapa). A porch connects the central hall to the platform. On the Pradakshina path wall, railings from the bottom, the first being occupied by Elephants, second row decorated with Cavalry forces, the third row being decorated with beautiful creepers and flowers like structure. The fourth row you can find combination of lions fighting with each other and in some places, you also can make out the Mascot of Hoysala being sculpted. One has to give special attention to fourth row while walking. The fifth row is again decorated with creepers, but one has to keenly observe the corners which have got the Simha Lanchana and these images are carved with great precision. The sixth row is the story board of Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bhagavatha, other Mythological series and also carvings of Samudra Manthana scene, Bheeshma sleeping on the bed made out of arrows and waiting for Uttarayana Punya Kaala to separate the body from the soul. Pralhada being tortured in many ways (such as, being crushed between Elephants, put into burning Yagna Kunda, thrown with poisonous snakes around, pushed into Pathala, etc.,), Abhimanyu entering the Chakravyuha, etc., The seventh row consists of Makara and eight rows consist of swans again, one has to give importance for the Corner stone work. beautifully studded with images of Lord Shiva, Vishnu Brahma, Lakshmi, Mahishasura Mardhini, Saraswathi, Krishna, Varaha, Ganesha, etc temple walls depicts the scenes from the epics, the Mabharatha, Ramayana and the Bhagavata. Each of the stone layers is filled with figures of animals,gods and designs.

History

This temple was built in 1220 A.D by Hoysala King Veera Ballala II and his queen Ketaladevi. Muslim invader Mallik Kafur ran over the region, looted and destroyed the temples in 14th century A.D.
