There are carved wooden figures on the ground floor and they are placed at regular intervals. This temple is built of laterite stone with roof topping built with woods and terracotta tiles.

Religious Significance

Tiru Anjaikalam is a gem among the Shiva sanctuaries of Tamilnadu sung by Saint Sundarar, otherwise called Nambi Aroorar, Thambiran Thozhar (Friend of Lord Shiva). He was conceived in Tiru Navalur in Villupuram locale. At the point when Cheraman went by Tiruvarur, Sundarar stretched out him all neighborliness to him. He made a trip with the lord to numerous Shiva focuses in Chola, Pandya and Kongu locales in the state. He came to Kodungalur in Kerala and stayed with the ruler Cheraman. Proceeding with his voyage, he spread the superbness of Lord Shiva. The inner sanctum houses a plain stone lingam. There is a scar mark on the left side on the top of the head. This marking is attributed to a story. When Shiva and Parvathi appeared before Arjuna in the form of Kiratha and Kirathu (hunter and huntress) Arjuna hit on the forehead of Kiratha which caused the mark. This was due to mistaken identity.

History

Maha dev is built in 8th Century by Cheraman Perumal a legendary Chera king and renovated by 1801 A.D. Chera Kings are the contributors for this temple. During the Mysore expansion by Tipu Sultan towards the south caused a heavy damage to this temple when his solders looted the temple valuable like gold ornaments, murals and destroyed its sculptures in the early 19th century.
