God

Presiding deity Lord Muruga appears in three postures as a smiling child, as Dandayuthapani the ascetic and a Gruhastha-family man with His consorts Valli and Deivanai.

Interesting Facts

  • The uniqueness of this temple is that the Lord is present here in three different forms- as a sweet child in the sanctorum, the nearby shrine in the form of a Brahmachari, Dhandayuthapani and in the final shrine as a Grahastha, Shri Valli Devasena Sametha Shri Subramanya Swamy. All are Swayumbu Murthis. Perhaps, we don’t get to see Him in three Swayambu Forms in any other Murugan Temple.

The temple is situated on top of a hillock and the steps are divided into sixty segments. Sri Balasubramaiya Swamy Temple has a 5 tier Rajagopuram and has a Vasishta Theertham.

Religious Significance

As per legend, several decades ago, some shepherds were grazing their sheep near this hill. One day, a new boy appeared in their midst. When the shepherds were climbing the hill in a competition, the new boy climbed very fast and when he reached the peak, it became very bright and the new boy disappeared. When it was informed to the village elders, they went to the hill top and found the three Murthis with evidence of Pooja being performed there. It is believed that originally there were only two shrines here- Subramanyar and Dhandayuthapani. Later Murugan came in the dream of one of the devotees and demanded the installation of the Child Form also. Hence the Balasubramanya idol was subsequently installed. Here He is wearing a Rudrakshamala and is adorned with a turban on His head.

History

This temple was 500-1000 years old.
