Goddess Danteshwari is the main deity of this temple, who is an incarnation of Goddess Shakti. In the six arms, there is a conch, khadg, trishul in the right hand and a bell in the left hand, and the hair of the demon is holding maa. The idol of Danteshwari Mai is chiseled out of black stone.

Architecture

Danteshwari Temple was constructed in South-Indian temple style of architecture, Lord Shiva performed his Tandav that destroyed most of the Universe, a part of 52 pieces of Maa Durga - Tooth ( Daant ) fell at the confluence of rivers Shankini & Dankini. Hence, this place got the status of a Shakti Peeth, whereat Maa Danteshwari is worshipped. In the mandapam there are few stones with ancient inscriptions.

Mandapams & Pillars : Temple divided into four parts - Sabha Mandap, Maha Mandap, Mukhya Mandap and Sanctum Sanctorum. In front of the main gate of the temple, the Garuda pillar of is situated. The temple is a unique example of the lion gateway of the entrance of thirty-two wooden pillars and a railing Mahamandap temple.

Religious Significance

According to the ancient legend, Goddess Sati immolated herself in the fire pit of Havan Kund, as she couldn’t tolerate the insult of her consort Lord Shiva committed by her father Daksha. Angered by the death of Sati, Lord Shiva destroyed the Havan and performed destructive Tandav dance carrying the body of Sati in his hands. To pacify him, Lord Vishnu chopped the corpse of Goddess Sati with his Sudarshan Chakra. The various body parts of the corpse of Goddess Sati were dropped over the fifty-two various places, which were consecrated as Shakti Peethas. It is believed that Sati's tooth was dropped at this place and Danteshwari Shakti Peetha was established. Goddess Danteshwari was previously known as Goddess Manikeshwari by the Nagas who ruled from 760 to 1324 A.D.

History

Danteshwari Temple was built in 14th century by Chalukya kings.
