Architecture

Works of art and Sculpture - It is difficult to see elsewhere such miraculous and artistic idol of Bhagwan Sahastrafana Parshvanath. Each and every carving in the pillars, ceilings and summits presents a vivid view of skilled craftsmanship. This temple built by Dhirushah is a beautiful example of skilled craftsmanship. Seeing the idols here, one feels that there was a keen competition among the sculpturists for delineating vivid beauty. The artistry of the main arched gate is really beautiful. Samavasaran, Ashtapadgiri and Kalpavriksh are beautifully carved and worth seeing. The ancient wooden chariot beautifully carved should also be seen.

The presiding deity of this place is ever present and miraculous. Many fortunate people get the Darshan of Dharnendradev. There are four small temples in the four corners of the main temple. The idols of Adinath, Ajitnath, Sambhavnath and Chintamani Parshvanath are installed in these four temples. As the temple is in Lodrava, it is also known as “Lodrava Parshvanath”. This Parshvanath is also known as “Chintamani Parshvanath”. This idol of Lodrava Parshvanath is alluring, magnificent and miraculous. Many miracles keep happening here. Now and then, a 6 feet Dharnendradev is seen and many pilgrims get darshan. During the Indo-Pak war, when bombing was going on Dharnendradev was seen on the Shikar of the temple throughout the war guarding the temple. Many people had seen this incident.

Religious Significance

In ancient times, Lodrava was a large and prosperous capital of Lodra Rajputs. This city was famous worldwide for its ancient university. It is said that in ancient times, King Sagar ruled this city. His two sons Sridhar and Rajdhar became Jains. They built a beautiful temple of Shri Chintamani Parshvanath in their city. This temple was destroyed by the Muslims. Shreshti Khimsi started the renovation of this temple and his son Punshi completed the renovation. A war took place between Rawal Bhojdev and Jaisalji. Jaisalji became victorious. He built a new city by the name Jaisalmer that became his capital. The idol of Shri Chintamani Parshvanath was brought to Jaisalmer and installed in a temple there. Shri Dhirushah renovated the temple of Lodrava and the search for a new idol began. Fortunately two skilled craftsmen of Patan were carrying two extraordinary and very beautiful idols that they had made during their life time to Multan. They halted for the night in Lodrava. The divine power asked them in a dream to hand over the idols to Dhirushah. Dhirushah also got the same dream. In the morning, without fixing the value for these idols, he gave sufficient gold to the craftsmen and got these idols. Hence this idol also came to be known as "Amoolya Parshvanath". The chariot in which these idols were brought is on display even today. These idols were installed under the auspices of Acharya Jinrajsuruji in the year 1675 of the Vikram era. The installed idols are present there even today. This is an ancient tirth, one among the five Panchtirthi of Jaisalmer.

History

The temple was built in 1156 A.D. The original temple was destroyed in 1178 A.D. when Muhammad Ghori attacked the city, but it was reconstructed by Seth Tharu Shah in 1615, with further additions in 1675 and 1687. Restored using state of the art methods in the late 1970s, the temples are reminders of the city's former glory.

In the 9th century, Deoraj, a famous prince of the Bhati Rajput clan, captured Lodrawa from Lodhruva Rajput clan and made it his capital. The city stood on an ancient trade route through the Thar Desert, which also vulnerable to frequent attacks. Mahmud of Ghazni laid siege on the city in 1025 A.D, in the coming decades the city, now more vulnerable was repeatedly attacked by foreign invaders. Later it was again attack and sacked by Muhammad Gori in 1178 A.D., which eventually led to its abandonment and established in new capital Jaisalmen by subsequent ruler, Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D, where the present fortress stand today.
