Goddess Hinglaj Mata is the main deity of this temple, who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi. There is no man-made image of the goddess. A small shapeless stone is worshipped as Hinglaj Mata. The stone is smeared with Sindoor (vermilion), which possibly gives the location its Sanskrit name Hingula, which is the root of the present-day name Hinglaj.

Architecture
Hinglaj is an holy shrine, located about 120km North West of Karachi, on the Banks of River Hingol at Makran. The reputation of Hinglaj as an holy place precedes the Arab invasion and the advent of Sufism towards the Sindh region. This sacred place of pilgrimage is particularly situated in a mountain cave "Hinglaj" on river bank of "Hinghol" at the foothills of "Kheerthar" mountains called "Kanraj" in Lyari district of Baluchistan, the province of Pakistan. It is considered one of the famous and biggest "Teeraths" of Indo Pak subcontinent.
Religious Significance
One day, a mega Yajna was held by Prajapati Daksha, but he intentionally didn’t invite Sati and Shiva. However Sati wanted to attend this Yajna but Lord Shiva urged her not to go to the Yajna site. But Sati didn’t pay heed to Shiva’s request and headed towards the Yajna location. But as she reached the site, her father Daksha ignored her and even insulted her husband Shiva. She couldn’t take this insult and decided to self immolate herself. Using her powers, she invoked fire and burnt herself to death but her body didn’t burnt. When Shiva came to know about this incident, he became violent and everyone present in the Yajna were decapitated by Virabhadra (Shiva’s violent version). But later on Shiva forgave everyone and were granted their lives back. Later on Lord Shiva started his Tandava dance holding the body of Sati in his hand. But while dancing, her body shattered into pieces and fell on various parts on the earth. The body turned into 51 pieces and wherever the body parts fell, those places came to be known as Shakti Peethas. It is said that the head of Sati fell at Hinglaj, that’s why this place is very sacred and powerful.
History
Hinglaj mata mandir is very old and has history of being in existence even before Mahabharata times (Dwapara Yuga). Sindh ruler Jayadratha (Saindhava), brother-in-law of Kauravas built many temples around Hinglaj Mata Mandir.
