Architecture

The Tripura Sundari Temple is build of the unique architecture of Tripura. The height of the temple is 75 feet, surrounded by 4 huge pillars in four corners of the temple. The root is built up of the Buddhist architectures. At the top of the temple seven pitcher/pots are set up holding one flag. The architecture of the temple is the combination of multi-culture and tradition of the country. The temple structure resembles the shape of a tortoise or a kurma and hence is called the 'Kurma Peeth'. The temple resembles the architecture of Bengal with its hut-shaped structure and its conical shaped roofs. The Kalyan Sagar lake on the eastern side of the Tripura Sundari temple lies on the eastern side of the lake.

There are two similar but different sized black stone idols of the Goddess in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The larger and more prominent idol of 5 feet height is of Goddess Tripura Sundari and the smaller one, adorably called Chhoto-Ma (literally, Little Mother), is 2 feet tall and is an idol of Goddess Chandi. Folklore says that the smaller idol was carried by the kings of Tripura to the battlefield.

Religious Significance

According to Hindu mythology, saddened by the death of Sati, Shiva took her lifeless body on his shoulders and started the Tandav dance with such ferocity that the other Gods were scared. To stop Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu cut Sati’s body into pieces which fell all over India, Pakistan, Burma and Nepal. The area where the right foot fell, is worshipped as the peethasthan.

It is said in the 16th century, a King used to be there and his name was King Dhanymanik. He was ardent worshiper of Maa Kali and one day in his dreams Maa Durga appeared and told him to get the idol of Maa from a mountain of Chinta village. Justly, King Dhanymanik awakened to order his soldiers to bring the idol. As a result, the idol was there to King till sunrise. As ordered by Goddess Tripureshwari, her temple was constructed and the idol was established in it. With time, her temple thereon was known as Tripura Sundari Temple.

History

The temple was constructed in 1501 A.D. by the then Maharaja Dhanya Manikya.
