This fort which was built during the Shilahar dynasty was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's in 1660 by defeating Ali Adil Shah. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's later rebuilt and strengthened the fort. The hidden entrance of the fort is one of its features. During the reign of Rajaram Maharaj, Kanhoji Angre put an end to the dishonesty of the castellan. Subsequent to Kanhoji's demise, Tulaji Angre took charge of Suvarnadurg and it became the seat of his power. However, he fell foul of the Peshwas. In the war with Tulaji Angre, Peshwas were supported by the British. In 1802, Bajirav Peshwa under attack by Yashwantrao Holkar was trying to take refuge in this fort but had to flee to Vasai as he was chased to the fort by the Holkars.

Fort Suvarnadurga was the birth place of Kanhoji Aangre, who was one of the most prominent leaders to receive the honorary ‘Sarkhel’ title from Chattrapati Rajaram. In 1640, Kanhoji’s father Tukoji Aangre was working under Shahaji raja. After the reign of Nijamshahi ended, this part of southern Konkan came under the rule of Adilshahi. After that, Maratha King Shivaji won the Suvarnadurga. However, the narrow walls of the fort might have been built during the Nizam period itself. Later in 1669, the Marathi armada properly repaired Suvarndurga due which its significance grew. After Kanhoji Aangre became the head of the Marathi Naval Force in 1698, the armada camps were established in Suvarnadurga and Vijaydurga. The Suvrandurga was under the control of the Peshwas untill 1731 without any battles being fought over it. Finally, in 1818, Colonel Kennedy, the British officer won the fort from the Peshwas.
