Architecture
Maha Ganapathy Temple has a Gopuram with three Kalisams and was constructed in Dravidian as well as South Indian architecture. There are 32 forms of Lord Ganesh, which hover around this entire temple, and in 32 different postures.
Religious Significance
Years before the capital of the erstwhile Travancore kingdom was Padmanabhapuram. The soldiers who guarded the palace at night were repeatedly harassed by a 'Yakshi' and hence no one was interested to do duty at the night time. One of the soldiers happened to be an ardent devotee of Lord Ganesha. When his turn came to take night vigil, he decided that the Lord will protect him from harm. He went for a bath that evening and stumbled upon a Ganesha statue, lying on the river bed. He saw this as a divine signal and took it with him to work that night and did not experience any trouble from the Yakshi.
History
Maha Ganapathy Temple was built in 1795 A.D by Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal and renovated in 1860.
