Architecture

Sri Janardhana Swamy Temple is facing in East direction and constructed in Kerala style of architecture. King Rama Varma from Travancore installed the flag post, temple has a pond known as Chakra Threetham. The Sanctum sanctorum surmounted by a conical dome of copper sheets, The main sanctorum is in circular shape. The mandapa or pavilion is square in shape and it has wooden carvings of Navagrahas (nine planets) on the ceiling. There is a hall in which the bali peetha is situated and this too is an important feature of the temple architecture. There are some inscriptions which indicate that the renovation of the temple had been carried out at different periods of history. One of the inscriptions says that the temple was renovated by Umayamma Rani, who ruled this region in the later 17th century. The traditional Kerala Temple architecture with a dome made of copper sheets, beautifully carved Navagrahas on the wood and the copper plated roof is a treat to the eyes.

Religious Significance

Once when the sage Narada was singing Lord Vishnu was so mesmerized by the song that he followed Narada’s voice unobserved and reached Brahmaloka. When Lord Brahma saw Vishnu he at once fell to his feet. But Vishnu realizing that he was at Brahmaloka did not see Brahma at his feet and left at once. The Devas who came there saw Brahma at the feet of Narada and laughed at him. Lord Brahma in anger cursed that the Devas shall be born as humans and suffer the mortal sufferings. Sage Narada told the Devas to do penance at Varkala to Lord Vishnu and attain immortality again. This place where they did their penance thus became the Janardhana Swamy temple. It is mentioned in Brahmanda Purana and Skanda Purana about the Lord manifestation. The current idol was found by a Pandyan king in the nearby sea. The king had a dream which directed him to go to the sea the next day and stand next to the crumbling temple from where he would see a huge amount of flowers floating in the waters. On searching around that spot, he would be able to find an idol, he was also given the instruction to make a golden hand and attach it to the idol which was done.

History

This temple was built in 13th century by King Marthanda Varma and renovated in 17th century. Umayamma Rani and Pandya kings are the contributors of this temple.
