Architecture

Kalkaji Mandir is a popular and highly revered Hindu shrine. The Kalkaji Mandir is also called ‘Jayanti Peetha’ or ‘Manokamna Siddha Peetha’ which literally means that all the desires of the devotees are fulfilled here by the deity Goddess Kalika who has taken this temple as her abode. The temple is situated on the Suryakoota Parvata (ie. Suryakoota Mount) of Aravali Mountain Ranges. That is why we call Maa Kalka Devi (Goddess Kalika) as ‘Suryakoota Niwasini’, that is one who dwells at Suryakoota. A 12-sided structure, Kalkaji Mandir has been constructed completely out of marble and black pumice stones. The black color is the sign to denote the goddess Kali, so the temple construction is made of black stone.

The Kalka Devi temple complex is constructed of brick masonry finished with plaster (now with marbles) and is surrounded by a pyramidal tower. The central chamber which is 12-sided in the plan, 24 feet across, with a doorway in each side, is paved with marble and is surrounded by a verandah 8'9" wide and contains 36 arched openings or exterior doorways. This verandah encloses the central chamber from all sides. In the middle of this arcade, opposite the eastern doorway, are two red sandstone tigers sitting on a marble pedestal. Both the pedestal, as well as the marble railings, contain Nastaʿlīq inscriptions of recent origin. Between the tigers, there is a stone image of Kali Devi with her name engraved on in Hindi, and a trident of stone standing before it.

Religious Significance

As per the beliefs, the temple is more than 3000-year old. It is also said that at this very same place where the temple is presently located, Pandavas and Kauravas came to offer their prayers to the almighty. Just to let you know, the first construction of this temple was held in 1734. With time, the shrine got modifications in its structure. The legend has it that there were two demons who troubled the gods who resided in the neighbourhood of the current temple. As a result of this, they approached Lord Brahma for the help but he declined to interfere and asked to visit Goddess Parvati. From the mouth of Goddess Parvati sprung Kaushki Devi who conquered the two demons. But while battling with them, the blood of the demons fell on the dry land and as a result of this, thousands of more demons came into life. Kaushki Devi, on the other hand, battled with all the demons. Seeing all this, Goddess Parvati concerned about her progeny and from the eyebrows of Kaushki Devi came Goddess Kali. She slaughtered the demons and drank the blood as it was pouring out of their wounds; finally, the goddess conquered a victory on demons. It is also said that Maa Kali manifested herself her and was commemorated as the chief divinity of the place.

History

The temple was built in 1764 A.D, renovation constructed by the Maratha Rulers in the late 18th century.
