Architecture

Origin of the Name - According to the legend, Lord Adikesava defeated the demon Kesi. The demon's wife prayed to the River Ganges and River Thamirabarani. They came in spate to wash off the lord. Mother Earth simply raised the ground level where Perumal was reclining. Both rivers went round the lord, prayed to him and continued to flow round as two garlands. Thus, the formation of the rivers made in a circle came to be known as Thiruvattaru.

The temple is facing in West direction and built in Dravidian style of architecture. There are close to 50 inscriptions inside the temple in both Tamil and Sanskrit including those relating to Kulothunga Chola-I and his contribution to this temple. In addition to the inscriptions, one also finds a number of stunning sculptures on the pillars similar to the ones in Krishnapuram and Srivaikuntam. Ottakkal mandapam outside the sanctum measuring 18 Feet width and 3 Feet height that has been built on a single stone in the 12th century A.D. Udaya Marthanda mandapam has exquisite wooden carvings and the highlight is the wedding procession of Lord Ganapathi. The corridors have 222 salabhanjikas and are unique. The idol of Perumal is made of a mixture of materials called Kadu Sarkarai Yogam with 16,008 Salagrama stones (stones with Narayana forms).

Religious Significance

According to the Puranas, Lord Brahma performed a Yaga without Saraswathi Devi, as a result of Saraswathi’s anger two asuras, Kesan and Kesi emerged out of the sacrificial fire, these Asuras troubled the three worlds. The Devas approached Vishnu for a solution. Following an almighty battle Lord Maha Vishnu in the form of Kesava, Perumal defeated Kesan, and then to secure him Adiseshan coiled around him. This is how Lord Kesava Perumal became known as ‘Adi Kesavan’. The second Asura Kesi, who had seen her brother Kesan defeated, wanted revenge and with her friend, Kothai they both took the form of rivers and surrounded the temple with the intention of submerging it. Bhoomi Devi (the Earth goddess) raised the temple away from the waters, and today the temple is surrounded by the rivers Parali and Kotha and stands at a height of 55 feet from ground level. The Puranas say ‘the rivers’ repented and were forgiven, then Perumal had a dip in Moovaatru Mukham, the place where the rivers joined with the Arabian sea and even today, during Painguni Utsavam, Perumal comes on a golden Garuda for a dip in the river, re-enacting the Shapa Vimochana incident. Thiruvattar Temple is orbited by a protective necklace of Shivalingams, and in March, during Maha Sivarathri, pilgrims visit these shrines chanting ‘Govinda’, Lord Vishnu’s name. The famous Shivalaya Ottam is said to be only complete when the devotees end their trip in the Perumal temple. There are too many sacred associations and agamas to mention here but scholars and devotees may approach the temple for further discovery.

The temple was built 1000 years ago.
