Architecture

The legend regarding the origin of temple describes the war between Lord Kumara Swamy and Tarakasura. As per the legend, Kumaraswamy broke the Lingam worn by Tarakasur as instructed by Lord Vishnu as he could not defeat the demon who had the Lingam on him. One of the places where the fragmented Lingam was placed by Lord Indra, is the Sri Amaralingeswara Temple. This temple exhibits the Dravidian style of architecture, built on a small hammock known as Krouncha Shaila. There are four gopurams encircling the shrine along with a Vimana, all built in the Dravidian way. The walls of the temple are contain inscriptions, which are similar to that of the Kota chiefs of Amaravathi and Sri Krishnadevraya, monarch of the Vijayanagara Empire. The wife of Proli Nayudu, the minister of the Kota king Ketaraja, inscribed the inscription on the Mukhamantapa pillar. There are Some Shasana's here indicating that the great king Srikrishna Devaraya's visit to Sri Amaralingeswara Swamy during the 16th century.

Narada told them that Lord Krishna had created the river Krishna, so he advised the rishis to live near the river and bathe in its holy water to attain salvation. Legend says that the temple was originally Buddhist and was adapted for Hindu worship. Hence the foundations are laid in Buddhist style.
