These caves are dedicated to Anantha Padmanabha Swamy and Lakshmi Narasimha Swami. On 1st floor Sri Maha Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Brahma arts were carved on the rocks. On the 2nd floor Padmanabha swami recumbent posture was sculpted out of a single rock which is 20 ft long. In 3rd floor unfinished triple shrine of Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma are located.

Interesting Facts

  • It is believed that there is an underground passage between Undavalli Caves and Mangalagiri Temple which is 8 km in length.

Architecture

Undavalli Caves were carved out of solid sandstone on a hillside and they serve as one of the finest testimonials to the viswakarma sthapathis. Inscriptions on the walls of the first floor are adorned with frescoes showing scenes from mythological stories and made in the 7th – 8th century AD, some paintings here have been done also in later time periods.

History

This rock-cut cave dates back to 6th -7th century A.D. The King Vishnu Kundina promoted Buddhism, during his times this caves used to be the rest homes for Buddist monks. Later this region came under the control of Hindu rulers who promoted Hinduism. Chalukyan Kings contributed to building this rock-cut caves. These caves are carved out of sand stone on a hillside in the period of 4th to 5th centuries. The main cave belongs to the earliest examples of Gupta architecture.
