Architecture

Sri Kailasanathar Temple faces in West and Dravidian style of architecture. This temple has an entrance arch and temple has three precincts. The shrine of his consort Sivakami (Parvati) is housed in a west-facing shrine. The temple also houses the images of Vinayaka, Subramanya, Veerabhadra, Rishabhandika, and Nataraja on the walls. Two sculptures - Veerabadra and a warrior in the flagstaff hall - are noteworthy. The west-facing shrine adjacent to the flagstaff has a hall with yali pillars, where Nataraja is housed. The temple has sculptural representation of sage Romasa, Agnipathar and Veerabadrar on the pillars in the temple dating back to the Nayak Empire. The shrine of the guardian deity Bhoothanathar, housing his wooden image, is an important shrine in the temple. It is believed that during historic times, the temple staff used to surrender the keys of the temple to its protector Bhoothanathar. The image of the Nataraja is always covered with Sandal paste and hence called Rathnasabapathy. The temple is believed to be originally built by the Pandya king, Chandrakula Pandya, who ruled over the region of Madurai. He built the central shrine and vimana of the temple. Veerappa Nayaka (1609-23 AD), a ruler of Madurai Nayak dynasty built the Yagasala, dwajasthamba (flagstaff) and Sandana Sababathy hall.

Religious Significance

According to the legend, Sage Romasa wanted to install the Shivalingas on the banks of the Thamirabarani. So, he asked his guru Agasthiya about this, who advised to throw flowers used for Shiva puja on the river and do the installations wherever the flowers reached the shores. Based on his advice, sage Romasa threw lotus flowers, nine of these flowers reached the bank. One lotus flower reached Srivaikuntam and is dedicated to one of the planets Sri Sani Bhagawan. The temple forms a series of Navagraha temples in the banks of Thamiraparani River where each of the nine planetary deities are considered to reside in one temple. The temples are classified as Nava Kailasam.

History

The temple is around 500 - 1000 years old. The temple is originally believed to be built by the Pandiya king, Chandrakula Pandiya. Vijayanagar, Nayak Kings mostly contributed to this temple.
