Architecture

As per the legend, there used to be a young Brahmin in Mylapore area, who used to perform poojas to Shiva Linga. Through his penance, he found out that Lord Shiva was the cause of creation, protection and destruction of this universe. Thereafter, he named the Shiva Linga (the main deity of this temple) that he worshiped as Kaaraneeswarar. (Kaaraneeswarar means one who has causes). Sri Karaneeswarar Temple is facing East direction and as per the tradition followed in all old South Indian temples and with 5 tier Rajagopuram. There is a Thirumurai mandapam in the outer prakaram of the temple.

History

Sri Karaneeswarar Temple was built in 12th century and Sage Vasishta worshipped Lord Karaneeswarar here.
