The main deity of this temple is Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal, Who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu facing East direction. Here the Idol is in standing posture and has four arms holding conch and discus in his two upper arms.

Goddess Sri Devi, Bhoo Devi and Neela Devi are the consorts of Lord Vishnu.

Interesting Facts

Vishnu is normally found with his two consorts, namely Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. However, in this sanctum, his third consort Neela Devi is also found.
The white marble idols of Ram with Lakshman on his right side and Sita on his left side is enshrined in the sanctum. (It should be noted that Ram has Lakshman instead of Sita on his true right side, which is not usual). Behind the idols of Ram Parivar, the black marble stone idols of Vishnu and his three consorts are found.

Architecture

Sri Prasanna Venkatesaperumal temple faces East and five-tiered tower with lot of interesting stucco figures is found at this entrance. The South facing entrance has three-tiered tower and there is another entrance at the North direction. The temple was constructed in Vijayanagara style of architecture. The vimaanam of this holy place is known as Padmavimanam and the sanctum enshrines very beautiful marble idols. The pillars are full of figures of elephants, horses, Yazhis, lions and soldiers and the sculptures in this mandapam appear like late Vijayanagara or Nayaka style. Black marble stone is used for idols of Vishnu and his three consorts and the koneru is named as Varaha Pushkarani.

Religious Significance

Many years ago, a Vishnu devotee, Laldas, a sanyasi lived in this area. Every day Laldas would commence his work after meditating on and praying to the Lord of Tirupati. He also had the habit of rendering service as far as he could, to those devotees who went on pilgrimage along this way. For a very long time he nourished a wish in his mind, to go to Tirupati and worship the Lord. But it could not be fulfilled. In course of time this desire became a longing in his mind. The Lord decided to grace him. One night the Lord appeared in Laldas dream and asked him to erect a temple in the place where he lived. Many years ago a Vishnu devotee, Laldas, a sanyaasi lived in this area. Everyday he would commence his work after meditating on and praying to the Lord of Tirupati. He also had the habit of rendering service as far as he could, to those devotees who went on pilgrimage along this way. For a very long time he nourished a wish in his mind, to go to Tirupati and worship the Lord. But it could not be fulfilled. In course of time this desire became a longing in his mind. The Lord decided to grace him. One night the Lord appeared in Laldas’ dream and asked him to erect a temple in the place where he lived. The happy sanyaasi commenced this work. But he had no money and so asked the people to help him build the temple. None was prepared to help him. So, by using his magical skill, he converted copper into gold. With the money by selling that gold, he began building the temple. People now understood his worth and then gave him money to build the temple. Then an image like that of Tirupati Venkatachalapathi was made and the temple was erected. The Lord manifested in the mind of Laldas and appeared before him. And thus gained the name ‘Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal’.

History

The temple is built in 17th century C.E by Saint Bairagi. The temple authorities have altogether different story. According to them, Bairagi Mutt was formed even before the British arrived Madras (Chennai). (Mutt, which is also written as Matha or Math, is more like a monastery for Hindu saints). Lal Das Ji, a Bairagi saint from Lahore (which is part of Pakistan nowadays), started this mutt in the early 1600s. He apparently cured the stomach ache of a rich Muslim woman. She donated gold coins to the saint, which he used to extend the mutt and built the temple of Venkatesa Perumal.
