Architecture

Lord Shiva appeared before Sun and relieved him from the curse and also merged in the Linga worshipped by Sun. Hence, Lord Shiva got the name Ravi Eswara, Ravi-Sun. Sri Ravishwarar temple faces East with 3 tier Rajagopuram. This temple koneru is named as Surya Pushkarini.

Religious Significance

Samugna Devi, wife of Sun God left him as she could not bear the heat emiting from Him. She left her shadow called Chaya Devi with Sun. Chaya Devi was impartial to Samugna’s sons. Sun came to know of this only later. On His way in search of his wife, He bypassed a place where Brahmma was conducting a Yagna. Brahmma, not knowing his mission cursed him to be born a human on Earth. To relieve himself from the curse of Brahmma, he installed a Linga in this place and worshipped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva Pleased and appeared before Sun and relieved him from the curse and also merged in the Linga worshipped by Sun.Hence, Lord Shiva got the name Ravi Eswara, Ravi-Sun.

In earlier days, there was the shrine for Lord Shiva only. The king of this region prayed to Lord to bless him with a child. Lord Shiva advised Ambica to be born as the daughter of the king. Ambica came to the garden of the king where she was crawling as a child under the Magizham tree. The king was too happy to have the child, named her Maragadambika and brought her up. When She attained the marriageable age, Lord Shiva had her hand. The Mother Shrine thus came later. This wedding festival is celebrated along with Aani Brahmmotsavam.
