Architecture

It extends from Satapanth to Nandaprayag in the Alaknanda river valley. In ancient times, the path to the temple went through the Badri van (Forest of berries). Hence, the suffix ‘Badri‘ is added to the seven holy shrines of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu appeared here as an old man before Narad who was performing penance at this place. This is why Vridha Badri gets its name where the word Vridha means ‘old‘ and Badri is the name of Lord Vishnu in Badrikshetra. It is a part of the Char Dham Yatra Package within Uttarakhand. The temple is 1,380 meters above the sea level and 7 km from Joshimath in Joshimath-Badrinath road. Vridha Badri lies on the way to Kalpeshwar Mahadev Temple and can be reached before Helang. The idol installed at Vridha Badri was found by Adi Shankaracharya at Naradkund, though the part of it remains damaged. While the main temple of Badrinath remains closed during the winter, the idol and priests hibernate at Joshimath. The temple has been built in the North Indian style of architecture and has a sanctum that contains representations of Lord Vishnu. Moreover, the chief priests of the temple are from Southern India.

Religious Significance

Legend expresses that wise Narada performed retribution at this spot to please ruler Vishnu. Satisfied by Narada’s atonement, ruler Vishnu showed up at Animath as an old man and offered an explanation to Narada’s supplication. Vishwakarma, the engineer of divine beings and goddesses, created the statue of Badri as an old man and the statue was built up in Animath. Master Badrinath inhabited Animath for quite a long time amid old circumstances. Afterward, the statue of Badrinath at Animath was flodded and tumbled down in the close-by lake Narad Kund.

History

In eighth Century, Aadi Shankaracharya found the softened statue of master Vishnu up the type of Vridha (old) man and restored it. Aadi Shankaracharya set up Badrinath at the present place. It is additionally said that the first statue made by Vishwakarma is currently settled at Badrinath.
