Architecture
The nearly 5-acre walled, temple complex has four gates and in the middle is a light tower guarded by dragons. There is a wide namaskaramandapa inside, with the teak rafters covered by sculptures. The oor of the inside courtyard is paved with granite slabs. The main temple tower is plated with copper and has two storeys, a rare style in Kerala temple architecture. On the north east is a temple of Goshalakrishna and on the south is a beautiful dance mandapa.
Religious Significance
Lord Krishna was performing his pujas in Dwaraka with four idols of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrugana. After Dwaraka was drowned in floods later, Sage Vakelwa got these idols. Lord appearing in his dream asked the Rishi to install them in places on the banks of Bharatapuzha River. Accordingly Rama was installed in Tiruparayar in Trissur district, Bharata in Irugnalakuda, Satrugna in Payamal and Lakshmana as Lakshmana Perumal in Tirumoozhikalam. This is the only Vishnu temple named after Lakshmana & according to other story Haridha Maharshi performed penance on Lord Vishnu here. Pleased with his penance, Lord appeared before and offered his wish. The Rishi asked the Lord to tell people an easy way to reach Him. Lord in his reply said that every one should practice the trade assigned to them according to Varnasrama Dharmas and offered the Sri Sukthi text explaining the puja rules. This event also is attributed to the name Tirumozhikalam (place of sacred, soft and auspicious words) which later changed as Tirumoozhikalam. One myth about its origin says that the idols here were installed during Dwapara Yuga while another says Lakshmana installed the idols here during Tretha Yuga.
History
It is believed that Lord Vishnu appeared before Haritha maharishi here and told him about the coming Kali yuga and what people need to do to escape its ill effects. Thus the place came to be called Thirumozhikkalam, which later evolved into Moozhikulam. Lakshman Temple was built in 4th Century A.D by Kulasekhara Varman and renovated in 18 century A.D and Chera rulers were the contributors for this temple.
