Architecture

According to legends, Barsana is the place where Sri Radha Rani was born and brought up amongst her friends. Sri Krishna used to come to Barsana to meet her beloved Shri Radha. One very great devotee of Lord Chaitanya, Narayan Bhatt Goswami, discovered the deities just close by and installed them here.

As the temple is on the hill, a beautiful staircase is built to reach the temple. There are around 108 stairs that one needs to climb to have the glimpse of Shri Radha Rani.The temple is facing in East direction and built in Rajasthani style of architecture. Looking at this temple it seems that it is the grand palace of a king. There are beautiful colorful pictures on the walls and ceiling of this temple, depicting the loving pastimes of Sri Radha and Krishna. The temple is made of red and yellow stones. At the foot of the steps that lead to this temple is the palace of Vrishabhanu Maharaj where one can have darshan of Vrishabhanu, Kirtida, Shridama and Shri Radhika. There are four peaks of these hills-Bhangarh, Maangarh, Daangarh and Vilasgarh and each of these peaks is one of the heads of Lord Brahma.

Religious Significance

According to legends, Barsana is the place where Shri Radha Rani was born and brought up amongst her friends. Shri Krishna used to come to Barsana to meet her beloved Shri Radha. According to the legends, Shri Krishna’s father Nand Maharaj Ji and Shri Radha’s father Vrishbhanu Maharaj were good friends and used to live in Gokul and Rawal respectively. Due to the atrocities of Kansa both Nand Maharaj and Vrishbhanu shifted to Nandgaon. Since Vrishbhanu resided on Bhanugarh Hill, the place became home to Radha Rani, where the temple is built today. Krishna and Radha’s pastime stories are innumerable and Barsana witnessed some of them. It is said that Krishna used to come to Barsana to play Holi with Shri Radha Rani.

History

The temple was built in 1675 by King Veer Singh and contributed by Orchha king.
