Origin of the Name - The birth place of Lord Shri Krishna. The Temple is known as Shri Krishna Janmasthan in Mathura or Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple Mathura.

Lord Shri Krishna manifested himself in the prison house of the cruel king Kansa and set free his father Vasudeva and his mother Devaki. His purpose was to destroy evil, protect the virtuous and establish righteousness on a firm footing. The temple here can be divided into three parts the Garbha-Griha (actual site of birth), Keshavadeva and the Bhagvata Bhavan. Inside the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple in Mathura, there is a prison like structure with a slab and it is believed that on that slab only Lord Shri Krishna took birth. The modern temple along with its great architecture and paintings on ceilings. Inside, visitors will find paintings of scenes from Krishna’s life. From the stones script written in Brahmi script “Mahakshatrap Shodash”. It is evident that a person named Vasu has built a Festonn and Yagna kund at the birth place of Krishna. There are Theerthams associated with this temple are Indra Theertham, Govardhana Theertham and Yamuna Theertham.

Keshavdeva Temple - The Keshavdeva Temple was built by Ramkrishna Dalmia in memory of his mother Jadiadevi Dalmia. The construction of the temple started on 29 June 1957 and inaugurated on 6 September 1958 by Hanuman Prasad Poddar. It is located south of the Shahi Eidgah.

Garbha Griha shrine - It is said that Shahi Eidgah was constructed on the sabhamandapa (assembly hall) of the original temple and the garbha griha (sanctum sactorum) was left. It is considered as the place of the prison cell where Krishna is believed to have born. A marble pavilion and an underground prison cell were built on the place with spacious veranda. There is shrine near it dedicated to eight-handed goddess Yogmaya. It is located against the rear wall of the Shahi Eidgah.

Bhagavata Bhavan - The construction of the temple dedicated to Shrimad Bhagavata was started on 11 February 1965 and the installation ceremony of the deities were held on 12 February 1982. It includes five shrines: the main shrine having six-feet tall couple of Radha and Krishna; the shrine of Balarama, Subhadra and Jagannatha on right; the temple of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita on left; Garuda Stambha (pillar) and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in front of Jagannatha shrine and Hanuman in front of Ram shrine; the temple of Durga and the temple with Shivalinga. The ceiling, walls and pillars of the assembly hall are adorned with frescoes depicting life events of Krishna and his associates and devotees. The text of Bhagavad Gita engraved on copper-plates adorn the walls of the parikrama (circumambulation) of the main temple. There are statues of Malaviya and Birla in the complex.

Potra Kund - There is a large and deep stepped water tank, Potra Kund or Pavitra Kund, in south-east of the Janmasthan temple which is said to have been used for the first bath of child Krishna after his birth. The steps of the tank were built by Mahadji Scindia in 1782. They were restored by his descendants in 1850.

Religious Significance

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi holds such a special place in the minds and hearts of Hindus because it is believed to be birthplace of Lord Krishna. The birth of Lord Krishna is one of the most interesting episodes of Bhagavata Purana and Mahabharata. He was born in Mathura which was then ruled by the tyrant King Kansa. Certain fortune tellers told Kansa that he would meet his death at the hands of the eighth child of Devaki. Acting on the prediction, he imprisoned Shri Vasudeva and Mata Devaki and arranged to have all of her children killed. Lord Krishna was born to Devaki in the eight month of her pregnancy at midnight. According to a miracle brought about by Lord Vishnu, all the doors of the prison were left unlocked that night. After his birth, Vasudeva carried the newborn in a basket across the river Yamuna.

Mathura - Demon named Mathu was killed in this place. Hence the place was called as Mathura.

Annihilation of Lavana - Once, when Sri Rama was ruling the country, Rishis like Shravana, Bhargava Maharishi and all other Rishis complained to Sri Rama that a demon, named Lavana, was giving them problems and because of this they could not do penance towards Lord Vishnu. So, they all asked Sri Rama that he should put an end to it. As a result, Sri Rama gave his great bow, which helped him to kill Mathu and Kaidaba to his younger brother Shatrughna. Getting the bow and the blessings from Sri Rama, Shatrughna fought hardly with the demon, Lavana and finally killed him using the bow given by Sri Rama. Thus, the Mathu town was saved from Lavana and all the Rishis and Devas thanked him and they asked him what he wants as a boon for killing Lavana. Shatrughna asked that the Mathu town should become a very big empire, with great warriors, lots of beautiful temples and lots of Vishnu Devotees. As requested by him, the Mathu town was blessed by Devas and Rishis and from then, Shatrughna ruled the Mathura Nagar and lots of temples were raised on the banks of Yamuna river. After Shatrughna, his generations ruled and after this, Mathura was ruled by Yadavas (Vasudeva).

History

The place holds religious significance since the 6th century B.C. The temples were destroyed multiple times throughout history, latest by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1670 who erected Eidgah there. In 16th century, the temple was also visited by the Vaishnava Saint, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It is believed that there was a massive idol of Krishna, over 4 meters tall and made of solid gold, which was stolen during an attack by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1017 A.D. Sikandar Lodi who was ruling Delhi in the later part of the 16th century destroyed this temple again. 1669 A.D. Aurangzeb destroyed Keshava Deva Temple. 1815 A.D. East India Company auctioned the area which was purchased by the Banaras King Raja Patnimal. In 20th century, the new temple complex was built with the financial help from industrialists containing the Keshavdeva temple, the Garbha Griha temple at the birthplace and the Bhagavata Bhavan.
