Architecture
The name Biligiri means white cliff (white rock), Rangana means Venkatesha and beeta means hill. Biligiriranganabetta has alternative references with the following names, ‘Bilikallu Betta’ and ‘Shwethadri’. This temple is facing in East direction and the architecture resembles Dravidian construction style. Kalyani Kola is also called "Theertha Tharuva Kola" is at walkable distance. Every day temple is opened only after water (Theertha) is brought from this pond.
Religious Significance
Why here : The Shri Ranganathaswamy, the presiding deity of the temple was installed by the sage Vashishta when Lord Srinivasa (Balaji of Tirupathi) blessed him with his appearance in B.R.Hills on Vashishta’s request.
Legends of the place : The Tribal occupant of Soliga Community living in their Podi the hutments at the Hillock consider master Ranganatha as their Bhava implies their Sisters spouse. It is likewise trusted that Lord Ranganatha use to meet Kusumale consistently on the appearance of chased Rabit. The sage Parushurama compensation at this hillock and loved the Lord Ranganatha to turn out from his Matruhatya Dosha. A Riveret which takes its introduction to the world here is being brought in his name as Bhargavi a tributary of the River Cauvery.
Puranas Reference : The earliest reference of this sacred place is available in the Bhrahmanda Purana in its ‘Teertha Prashamsara Khanda’. The place also has reference as ‘Champakaranya’ (the forest of Champaka flowers) in pursnas and also as ‘Gajaranya’ (the forest of elephants) during the rule of the region by the Ganga dynasty. This is how ‘Shwethadreesha’ came to worshipped as ‘Shwethadreesa’. ‘The Shwethachala Mahathme’ in its third chapter describes that Shri Rama and Sri Lakshmana, the main characters of epic Ramayana have performed worship in this sacred place during their search mission of Seetha.
History
The temple was built in 1667 by Vishnuvardhana, Paleyagar Sree Mudduraju of Hadinadu. The temple is renovated by Vishnuvardhana and is in Dravidian style of architecture. Then Paleyagar Sree Mudduraju of Hadinadu and these slopes were given as "Datti" to the Lord Poornaiah of the past Mysore Samstana of Wodeyar period left two towns to the temple as Dattigramas.
